Finding a Mentor

Magick has a way of reaching into every corner of your life, in every encounter, in every silence. If you’ve only just begun the journey, chances are you have yet to see the serendipitous ways in which magick works. Just when you think your magick hasn’t produced an outcome and you’re ready to give up, you receive a letter in the mail or a knock at the door and what you’ve been asking for has shown up right at the last minute. There is a common theme amongst people who dream big and find success: many go through a period of paying their dues. This can be a year, five years, ten years, but just as they’re beginning to wonder if they’ve wasted all their time in the pursuit of an unachievable goal, life gifts them the manifestation of their dreams. The beginning stages of working with magick felt a lot like that for me. It came with a lot of research (still does), self-discovery, and patience.

On the hero’s journey one is met with a mentor, someone who provides wisdom and years’ worth of knowledge. Without this mentor, the hero of the story may never have become the hero. In life and in magick, you will meet lots of mentors along the way, many of which will not be what you are expecting. It will hardly ever be like in the movies where you meet a mysterious teacher shrouded in a cloak that approaches you and offers to guide the way. It’s much more subtle and less strange—well … sometimes. It will be more like people passing in and out of your life revealing the secrets of magick with the words they speak and the actions they take. If you are watching and listening, secrets are always revealing themselves to you. They will be in the trees and the songs of the birds that offer their expertise. It will be the person who aggravates you the most that has the most to teach you.

A few years ago, I went to a yoga class, and we were asked to chant in order to get in touch with the divine teacher that lives within us. That night I went home feeling a bit lighter, freer, and curious about the small but significant transformation I felt during the class. The teacher within is perhaps the most unexpected teacher of all. It is very possible that we already hold most of the answers to the questions that we seek; we just never take the time to ask. The path of magick has a way of peeling back the layers and exposing the vulnerable underbelly of the person staring back in the mirror. The true self, when first glanced upon, looks strange to the eye, its aura a different shade than what we’re used to, but before too long we begin to wonder how it went unseen for so long. Meditation, trusting your intuition, and leaning into what excites you will assist with hearing the messages of the true self.
